Brooklyn To The Upper East Side: Couture and contrast
Hey girlies,
Long time no see, huh?
I have been a lil busy watching gossip girl during the summer.
If gossip girl taught us anything, it’s that fashion is just not about the clothes, its about who you are, who you want to be, and doing all that without opening your mouth. So let's get started on how to look like you have a trust fund (even if you don't).
Let's start from the top. Literally.
The Upper East Side: Where couture is a given.
On the Upper East Side couture wasn't a flex. It was a language, spoken fluently. Blair Waldorf is the perfect example of living in this world. Custom head bands, perfectly tailored coats, and all buttoned up collars, every look said: I was born into this. But, Serena Van Der Woodsen was a wild card, she was the poster child of less prim, more playful, but always designer. Metallic minis, plunging necklines, boho bags, her style yelled: I don't try, I just look this good.
A special mention to mama Van Der Woodsen. Kelly Rutherford who played as Lily was absolutely mesmerizing. Lily gave us quiet luxury decades before it was even a trend. While the teens were busy making statements, Lily was the statement.
Brooklyn: Thrift, DIY & the climb up
Jenny Humphrie, she wasn't dressing to fit in, she was dressing to climb up. Her transformation from plaid and pins to smokey eyes and mini dresses wasn't an accident. She built her fit like how she built her reputation: piece by piece, bargain by bargain, nastier and nastier.
Brooklynites didn't even have stylists or credit cards, all they had was perspective, edge, and the will to be who they want to be.
Moral of the story?
Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy a killer wardrobe, social immunity, and confidence. Which, let’s be honest, is basically the same thing.
XOXO,
Gossip girl
